SHOP SAFFRON

Our saffron comes from Khorasan, Iran, a region with a long tradition of saffron cultivation.
For centuries, saffron has been part of Persian culture and cuisine, valued for its remarkable colour, aroma and flavour. Today, Iran is the world's leading producer of saffron and accounts for more than 90% of global production.
Saffron comes from the delicate flower of Crocus sativus. The red stigmas are carefully separated from each flower and dried to become the fine saffron threads we use in cooking.
It takes only a few threads to transform a dish or drink. Saffron brings a beautiful golden colour, a distinctive aroma and a complex flavour to rice, savoury dishes, desserts, tea and infusions.
Its unique character comes in part from naturally occurring compounds called crocins, picrocrocin and safranal. They are closely associated with saffron's colour, taste and aroma.
What saffron does when a few threads are placed in water, and what this simple test can and cannot tell you.

Take a few saffron threads from your package.

Place them in a glass of cool water.

After a few seconds, the colour starts to release gradually.

After a few minutes, the water turns a clear yellow-to-golden hue, while the threads remain visible.

Genuine saffron has a naturally varied texture and shape, with characteristic reddish threads that remain visible and intact as the colour gradually releases into the water.
Artificially dyed material often appears more uniform and may release colour very quickly. As the dye disperses, the threads can become noticeably lighter and take on an unnatural appearance.
A simple test for greater confidence
This is a simple at-home screening test, not a laboratory authentication method. Appearance and colour release alone cannot prove purity, origin or quality.
International standards and laboratory analysis can provide more objective information about saffron, while batch traceability helps connect a product to its origin and documentation.
An international standard used to evaluate dried saffron through defined quality requirements and analytical methods.
Laboratory testing can examine measurable characteristics associated with saffron’s colour, taste, aroma, moisture and purity.
Batch information can help connect saffron to its origin, harvest or production records and the documentation available for that specific lot.
